China has built seven hydropower dams on the upper Mekong River (known as the Lancang in China), and plans to build 21 more. The area has been suffering from a severe drought. Dams are known to threaten fish populations, cause major soil erosion and alter natural river hydrology, jeopardizing the future of the entire lower Mekong River basin as a life-sustaining ecosystem. The Mekong River flows through six countries in Southeast Asia. There have been many concerns from the Lower Mekong communities on how these dams will impact their lives and livelihoods. Hydroelectric dams upriver have also restricted water flow. The people of Southeast Asia need the clean electricity—but also the fish and rice that an undammed river provides. LAOS has submitted plans to build a new hydropower dam later this year and started consultations with the Mekong River Commission (MRC).
